Many Australians are concerned about the welfare of the animals we eat, but we can struggle to find welfare-friendly products that come from animals that have had optimal welfare.

That’s because animal-based products come with a barrage of labels, claims or certifications, such as organic, cage-free, free-range, vegetarian-fed, humane or humanely raised.

In Australia, legislation does not require producers to adequately disclose information about farm production methods. So, while many producers and retailers want to support best practice in the production and supply of animal-based foods, the challenges of labelling are rendering the intentions of consumers and suppliers meaningless.

Kinder Food Finder will help you decipher these labels, claims or certifications by providing ratings of Avoid, Good, or Best that tell you all you need to know regarding the animal welfare conditions behind them. We reduce the confusion and give you the power to make kinder choices.

Kinder Food Finder was created by students at the University of Sydney.
